Educating urban professionals
The Master's in Urban Studies (MUS) is an academically rigorous program deeply rooted in empirical research and societal relevance. It places a strong emphasis on cultivating urban researchers and professionals equipped to bring about meaningful change in complex and diverse urban environments. Reflecting this mission, our graduates attest that their MUS education has prepared them in several ways. These include the ability to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds and mindsets, bridge disciplinary gaps, collaborate effectively within teams, and identify and engage with pressing social issues.
After completing their studies, most of our graduates transition into the non-academic job market. However, approximately one in five choose to further their academic career by pursuing another master's degree or advancing to a Ph.D. level. Specializations at these advanced levels often gravitate towards fields closely aligned with MUS, such as urban planning, geography, applied economics, or sociology.
From urban studies to the world of work
Our alumni are engaged in diverse sectors, with employment spanning public institutions, including government administrations (37%), private companies (26%), NGOs, and other non-profit organizations (24%). Additionally, a noteworthy 11% has ventured into self-employment. Nearly 70% of our respondents are employed full-time (defined as 31+ hours per week), while another 20% hold substantial part-time positions (21-30 hours per week).
Not surprisingly, given the inherent diversity of the field of urban studies, our alumni hold an array of job titles. These encompass roles such as policy and program officer, project manager, junior energy expert, policy advisor, program development manager, climate plan coordinator, architect, journalist, social worker, science and innovation country lead, technical designer, commissioner for limited-profit housing, land use planning manager, and many more. Beyond these formal titles, our alumni reveal an even broader spectrum of skill sets in their qualitative descriptions, showcasing the diverse and impactful nature of their roles.
Finding employment
Within three months of graduating from MUS, 71% of our alumni secured employment, and an additional 21% found a job within six months. The majority of these positions were closely aligned with urban concerns, with only 16 % of respondents indicating that their current job had no connection to their field of study. A notable 74% of our graduates emphasized that having MUS on their CV proved to be a valuable asset, recognized and appreciated by potential employers.
