Ruben Van Vooren is a PhD researcher at VUB in the field of circular construction.

Ruben became an architectural-engineer at the University of Ghent in 2017. During a postgraduate program at Odisee (2018) he started focusing on biological cycles of construction materials and techniques. This focus shifted gradually to technical cycles (reuse, repair, remanufacture, …) while doing technical audits and feasibility studies at Bureau Bouwtechniek (BB).
In 2021 he started his PhD at VUB in collaboration with BB. In his research he aims for integrating material flows of existing façade components into advisory assignments. To do this he combines a focus on (1) the value-network of the façade industry, (2) decision-making processes on a project level and (3) the practical application of several criteria (such as LCA) in the early phase of a project. He believes combining several perspectives (owner, architect, manufacturer, regional, global, …) will be key to realise a more sustainable urban metabolism.
