Koen Borghys is a PhD researcher at Studies in Media, Innovation and Technology (SMIT), Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

His PhD focuses on the monitoring of progress by local actors (both public and private) within the Brussels Capital Region towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The project combines several of his personal interests: cities and municipalities (the local level), data-driven policymaking and sustainability. Before his PhD Koen was already working as a researcher at SMIT, focussing on smart city related projects with local governments.
