Karl-Filip Coenegrachts is Master of Laws, specialized in European and International Law. Karl-Filip is head of the data, governance and communities unit at the Studies in Media, Innovation and Technology research group, also affiliated with imec (imec-SMIT, VUB). He is also senior policy advisor data spaces and local digital twins of FARI, the AI for the Common Good Institute in Brussels and the Chair of the Board of Directors and acting Executive Director of the international cities’ network Open & Agile Smart Cities.
The main focus of the work of his unit is on governance and business aspects of urban digital transformation and urban innovation, including data spaces, local digital twins and personal data pods.
Before joining imec-SMIT, VUB, he served in government for 24 years, working on digital policies and digital transformation programmes at the Belgian FPS Justice and at the local level as Chief Strategy Officer of the City of Ghent.
