Barbora Wouters

Her research interests include the archaeology of towns and dwelling in the (Early) Medieval Period in the Low Countries and Viking-age Scandinavia, the study of dark earths (terres noires), the development and application of archaeological method and theory, research methods, public outreach, and museum studies. From 2021 onward, she co-teaches a course on archaeological science and supervises student research. Her work, combining archaeology and scientific techniques, has been awarded several prizes, including the Nenquin Prize, the Renée De Bock Doehaerd Prize and a Quaternary Research Workers' Award. She was a laureate of the EOS Pipette Award for most promising young researcher in Flanders (2018). She also contributes to, and is on the editorial board of the archaeological outreach magazine Ex situ – Tijdschrift voor Vlaamse Archeologie (http://exsitu.be) that aims to make local and regional archaeology more accessible to a wider audience. Dr Wouters was elected as a member of the Jonge Academie in 2021. She is dedicated to societal issues, including equal opportunities, inclusion, and diversity in academia as well as in the archaeology and heritage sectors, and is committed to advocating for Early Career Practitioners in these fields.
