Cosmopolis Lunch Seminar w/ Eric Corijn | Brussels Centre for Urban Studies

            The Cosmopolis Lunch Seminars are meetings hosted by Cosmopolis, which allow researchers from within and outside of the research group to share progress and findings of their research on urban issues. Every presentation is a starting point for a larger debate on urban research issues tackled by all the participants. During 1h, there is a presentation or debate with one or more (guest) speaker and ample time for further conversation with all present. Afterwards, we take a collective break (we provide desserts!) where conversations can continue in an informal setting.

Democracy is at stake. That also puts the European Union under pressure. The single market has transformed Europe into a centre-periphery dynamics and a space of flows within a metropolitan network. Resistance against the authoritarian tendencies comes from the cities. That’s why we have to rethink urban democracy. And to analyse what a capital city like Brussels can mean.

Eric Corijn, is philosopher and sociologist, professor in Urban Studies at the VUB, founder of Cosmopolis, Centre for Urban Studies, Brussels Studies Institute and Brussels Academy, member of several commissions and juris, director Policy & Research of the Global Parliament of Mayors, author of more than 350 publications, with the latest book: De verenigde steden van Europa.
