Lisa-Marie Hemerijckx is an assistant professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, affiliated with the Department of Geography and the Cosmopolis Centre for Urban Research. She teaches courses on GIS, spatial analysis and modelling techniques, and co-developed the Urban Food Systems MOOC on edX.

Her research focuses on the relationships between urbanisation, food security and food environments in low- and middle-income countries. She investigates how rapid urban growth influences physical, social and economic access to food for vulnerable households, and how food vendors adapt to changing built environments.

Lisa-Marie Hemerijckx primarily uses quantitative approaches, including household and vendor surveys, spatial analysis and agent-based modelling. These methods are complemented by qualitative work with stakeholders across food systems, including urban planners, policymakers and farmers. Through this interdisciplinary approach, she seeks to better understand the complex interactions between urbanisation and food systems, and to provide evidence-based decision support for building more resilient, just, and sustainable cities.
