Merlin Gillard is a PhD candidate in geography at LISER and VUB since 2021. His research interests pertain to the political economy of mobility policies, the labour conditions of transport workers, and public space policing and surveillance.

In his PhD, he investigates the politics of public transport fare policies through (including fare-free public transport) these three lenses. Notably, he examines the impacts of such policies in how public transport spaces are policed, and the role of transport workers and passengers in these processes. In addition, he researches the implications of fare policies for the working conditions of transport staff.
