Jozef Vandermeulen is a PhD researcher in urban geography at the Cosmopolis Centre for Urban Research. He obtained his Master’s degree in Conflict & Development studies at the University of Ghent in 2020 and has several years of experience as a researcher and campaigner in Belgian civil society.

His research examines the infrastructure of community building in Brussels, adopting a critical, political-economic perspective that pays particular attention to the ownership structures and power relations at play. Jozef also engages with debates on what “community” means in a contemporary hyperdiverse city like Brussels, exploring how various interpretations of that concept shape the city’s community building spaces and their relationship to their urban context.
