Pieter Martens teaches courses in Architectural History and Architectural Preservation. His research deals with the history of architecture and urbanism in early modern Europe and concentrates mainly on sixteenth-century military architecture, engineering, siege warfare, and urban iconography.

He graduated in 1999 as architectural engineer at the University of Leuven and studied also at the Sapienza University of Rome. His PhD thesis (2009) received the Erik Duverger prize (KVAB, 2009) for its use of archival sources and the Justus Lipsius award (ICOMAM, 2011) for its contribution to military history. He has held postdoctoral research fellowships of FWO (KU Leuven, 2010-2013) and FNRS (UCL, 2013-2016) and was also the coordinator of PALATIUM, a European research networking programme on court residences (ESF, 2010-2015). He is a Laureate (Class of Arts) of the Royal Academy of Belgium (KVAB, 2015), an alumnus of the the Young Academy of Belgium (Jonge Academie, 2014-2019), and a member of the Royal Academy of Archaeology of Belgium.
