The super-rich and the city: arts-based philanthropies and cultures of giving. | Pablo Fuentenebro (Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne)
The unprecedented accumulation and concentration of wealth by so-called High Net Worth Individuals (HNWI) and corporations over the past couple of decades has paved the way to a new ‘Golden Age’ of philanthropy. Discussions about philanthropy, however, have paid little attention so far to the urban dimension of today’s philanthropic giving and the role that urban elites play in this process. Taking as a point of departure recent debates on HNWI and ‘super-philanthropy’, this talk focuses on the different institutional systems, financial incentives, and discourses the 'super-rich' use to shape and influence cultural agendas and urban governance through place-based giving and art-based philanthropy.
