Space Transformers: Learning strategies for situated active citizenship through game based explorations and actions in, with and for the city of Salo, Finland | Jens Brandt (Tampere University)
Space Transformers is a result of the EU funded research project: Urban Education Live with Tampere (lead), Sheffield, Bucharest and Ljubljana Universities. It builds on concepts such as Service Learning, Situated Learning, Lived Citizenship, Urban Living Labs and the Engaged University. The aim of the project was to develop new models and pedagogies for mutual learning processes between universities and urban communities.
The presentation will have 3 parts: A: Brief contextualization - theoretical (Lefebvre, Arendt, Freire, Lave) and practical (Pratt Centre, NYC). B. The initial pedagogical experiments in collaboration with the local high school, local actors and Salo municipality. The final test with 40 local high school pupils and students from Tampere School of Architecture in 2019. C. Reflections on how such learning strategies can build an "urban capacity" especially among youth, that can drive democratic transformations and engagement.

Jens Brandt’s background is in the fields of architecture, theatre and visual arts. His main work has been with “the urban” on the borders between action research, process design and urban development. From large scale (Oresund region) to a local scale: Facilitating processes that strengthen weak communities (social housing in the suburbs of Copenhagen).
His present work is a “super site specific” method or active space that combines elements from participatory performance, pervasive games and psychogeography with his artistic background and experience from work in vulnerable neighbourhoods.
