The conference ‘Towards inclusive public transport in urban regions’ is organised as part of CarinPT, a research project led by academics at Tallinn University, TOI Institute for transport Economics Oslo, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Tyrens Stockholm, K2 Sweden and Lund University. Both the conference and the project seek to refocus public transport research and policy on justice, equity, and fairness.

Between spring 2022 and spring 2025, the partners of Carin-PT explored public transport and the built environment in relation to justice, equity and fairness. The project provides theoretical and empirical understandings of how (through what mechanisms) costs and benefits of transition of PT are and will be distributed, amongst whom (which social groups and individuals) and where (which parts of the city and which kinds of built environments).
The conference builds on the research around inclusiveness, social sustainability, and transport justice, highlighting three key dimensions: the distribution of access and benefits, the recognition of diverse public transport needs, and the participation in decision-making processes. Through a two-day conference, we create a platform for the exchange of experiences, critical reflections, best practices and challenges.

Presentations will address the inclusiveness of public transport systems in various urban regions, including both densely populated, peri-urban, and remote areas, from an intersectional perspective. A special focus will go to the integration of micro-mobility with public transport, the role of flexible and on-demand systemsinclusive TOD, and the impact of pricing on transport inclusivity. Additionally, the conference will explore participatory public transport planning, such as urban living labs and other inclusive platforms, to investigate whether and how diverse needs of different societal groups are met.

The final conference will take place on 6th and 7th of February at Uset – Brussels
