The goal of FLAMENCO is to build and valorise an open reusable and reconfigurable citizen observatory platform for Flanders. Through this platform, stakeholders themselves can instantiate new citizen observatories for the particular application area and campaigns they have in mind without needing to be proficient in IT-related areas.

The contribution of iMinds-SMIT lies in addressing the following questions:
- What motivates people to participate in participatory sensing campaigns and related citizen science initiatives
- How can mobile and pervasive game design inform the set-up and process of such campaigns?
- What constitutes successful and meaningful public participation in these campaigns?

Our partners will tackle technological challenges such as issues relatetd too reactivity (i.e., dealing with data flows and the propagation of change) and coordination in citizen observatories as data-intensive cloud applications, and processing large amounts of heterogeneous data. They will also investigate how to gather high-quality mobility and environmental data through participatory sensing and how to translate the data into meaningful indicators and make the data set usable for decision-making and impact assessment.
