Tom Bauwens is a postdoctoral researcher in the research group Crime & Society (CRiS). He graduated as a Master in Criminological Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in 2009. He subsequently worked on a policy supporting research project regarding ‘integrated local safety and security policy’ in Belgium. In 2010, he became a fellow of the Flanders Research Foundation (FWO) and wrote his doctoral dissertation about the role of the mayor in the local governance of security: an interpretative inquiry into how Flemish mayors ascribe meaning to the contested concept of security. He succesfully defended his PhD on 7 October 2014. Since then, he works as a postdoctoral researcher and is affiliated with the Interuniversity Attraction Pool "Justice & Populations” (UIAP) and the Strategic Research Program “Crossing Borders” (SRP).
