Jelena Dobbels obtained a Master in History at the University of Antwerp. Her MA dissertation ‘Towards a heritage policy. The demolition of the Antwerp Burcht as a case study for the changing attitude towards heritage (1863-1900)’ explored nineteenth-century approaches to and ideas on heritage. This research prompted a further specialization in the field of heritage and monument conservation (Master Conservation of Monuments and Sites, Artesis Hogeschool Antwerp). As of October 2014 she is a doctoral researcher at the department of Architectural Engineering. Her research focuses on the evolution of the Belgian building culture in the 19th and early 20th century with special attention for neglected actors such as contractors.
