Gloria González Fuster is a research professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Member of the Law, Science, Technology and Society (LSTS) Research Group, she investigates legal issues related to fundamental rights, privacy, personal data protection and security, and lectures on fundamental rights protection in European Union (EU) law in the context of the Master of Laws in International and European Law (PILC) of VUB’s Institute for European Studies (IES). She has published The Emergence of Personal Data Protection as a Fundamental Right of the EU (Springer, 2014), a monograph based on her PhD dissertation defended at VUB’s Faculty of Law and Criminology.

She is currently contributing to the research project Promoting Integrity as an Integral Dimension of Excellence in Research (PRINTEGER) and to the action Introducing Data Protection and Privacy Issues at Schools in the EU (ARCADES), both co-funded by the EU. She has previously participated to the projects Reflexive Governance in the Public Interest (REFGOV), Converging and Conflicting Ethical Values in the Internal/External Security in Continuum in Europe (INEX) and Privacy and Security Mirrors (PRISMS), as well as to the Future of Identity in the Information Society (FIDIS) Network of Excellence and the Living in Surveillance Societies (LiSS) COST action. She is also a member of the Advisory Board of various EU-funded projects.

Previous education

Gloria González Fuster studied Law at the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia, Journalism at the Faculty of Communication Sciences of the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (including a stay at the Université Paris VIII), and Modern Languages and Literatures at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. 

Previous positions

Gloria González Fuster has worked at the European Commission’s Citizenship Unit of the Education and Culture Directorate-General (DG EAC) and at the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA).
