Frederik’s research interests cover urban remote sensing and urban modeling. His current work focuses on producing reliable and detailed land-cover data for urban hydrologists and climatologists to parametrize hydrological and climatological models. Frederik makes synergetic use of hyperspectral imagery and LiDAR data to produce urban land-cover data with a high level of spatial and thematic detail. Using spectral unmixing approaches, he also analyses how an optimal trade-off between spatial coverage and thematic-spatial detail can be achieved. In the second phase of his PhD research, Frederik will focus on developing a modelling approach that integrates neigbourhood based representations of human activity, as used in an agent-based urban growth model for the Brussels metropolitan area, with grid based representations of urban form, as used by hydrologists and urban climatologists. The outcome of Frederik’s research should provide architects, urban planners, policy makers and other interest groups with a tool that would allow them to assess the climatological-hydrological impact of future urban development. The tool should also allow one to assess the impact of different urban development strategies on urban heat and water regulation.

Frederik’s expertise includes:

  • Urban remote sensing
  • Synergetic use of hyperspectral and LiDAR data for urban land-cover mapping
  • Dimensionality reduction of hyperspectral datasets
  • Matlab and Python programming
  • UrbanSim
