Mattias De Backer is a researcher at the VUB Criminology Department with Prof dr Jenneke Christiaens and Prof dr Els Enhus as supervisors. He holds a Master’s degree in Philosophy (UGent), a postgraduate in Arts and Culture Management (Hogent) and an Advanced Master in European Urban Cultures (VUB). His doctoral research project is about urban youth and conflict in public space; an ethnography of hanging around. 

He is a lecturer in the Master’s course Crime and the City in the Criminology Department (VUB). Mattias is a member of the Tijdschrift over Cultuur en Criminologie Advisory Board and Editorial Assistant to Criminological Encounters. A book edited by Mattias, entitled Order and Conflict in Public Space and contracted by Routledge, is going to be published in 2016.
