Inge Arteel is Lecturer of German Literature at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. She studied German and English Philology at Ghent University and took courses in Austrian Literature at Vienna University. Since summer 2014 she is the chair of the VUB research group CLIC (Centre for Literary and Intermedial Crossings). With Katharina Pewny (UGent) she supervises the alliance research group THALIA (Interplay of Theatre, Literature and Media in Performance). She is a member of the international advisory board of the Elfriede Jelinek Forschungszentrum (Vienna University). In the FWO WOG on Cultures of the Spectacle (“Spektakelcultuur”, KULeuven), in the board of the Vereniging voor Algemene Literatuurwetenschap (VAL) and in the board of the ManaMa Literatuurwetenschap she is one of the VUB representatives; furthermore she is a member of the editorial board of the VAL-Cahier and of the alliance research group SEL (Studiecentrum Experimentele Literatuur).

Her research focuses on experimental and neo-avant-garde literature in German, on Austrian and German postdramatic theatre, literary theory and gender theory. She is one of the VUB co-supervisors of an FWO project on Text and Theatricality (UGent) and the VUB co-supervisor of an FWO project on the radio play (UGent). She is the author of an introduction in life and work of Friederike Mayröcker (Wehrhahn Verlag 2012) and of a scientific monograph of that same author (Aisthesis Verlag 2007). She has published articles on Friederike Mayröcker (on her prose and aural texts), Elfriede Jelinek (on her prose and theatre), Gerhard Roth, Marieluise Fleisser, Verena Stefan, Marlene Streeruwitz, Judith Butler, and others. She has translated work by Elfriede Jelinek into Dutch (all published by Querido Amsterdam).
