Daniel Acke is a professor of French literature and culture at the Department of Languages and Literature: Roman Languages (LIST) (VUB). His research focuses on the issue of Modernity and humanism, as reflected in classical and modern French literature. This includes inquiry into philosophical topics such as self-knowledge and recognition in the classical moralists (Vauvenargues, Marivaux…), topics of urban literature (fashion, gallivanting…), and non-religious mysticism in writers of the 20th century (Cioran, Camus, Sartre, Bonnefoy…).
