Writing (on) the Urban Question

May 7-9th, 2018

Writing (on) the Urban Question is the first workshop of its kind in Brussels organized by the VUB Graduate School for Urban Research. It is an exciting and unique multidisciplinary writing workshop, specifically tailored for doctoral students and early-career academics working on urban issues. The workshop is led by the renowned creative writer, literature consultant, and urban activist,  Sarah Butler, based in Manchester, the UK.

Writing (on) the Urban Question is an interdisciplinary and interuniversity event that will bring promising junior researchers from across Belgium and Europe together at VUB. For our first year, we have fourteen doctoral students (in the final stages of their study) and early-career academics participating in the workshop. These participants were selected from among a pool of 30 very qualified applicants from across Europe.  While all participants work on urban issues, they come from a variety of disciplines, including, human geography, urban studies, sociology, spatial planning, and politics.

The programme of the workshop consists of two days of indoor writing exercises and discussion, as well as one day out and about in Brussels, using the city as a rich context to practice a different form of writing.  The theme of the first day (May 7th) is Writing and Place and that of the second day (May 8th) is Writing Processes and Techniques. The theme of the workshop’s final day (May 9th) is Writing and the City. A detailed programme of the workshop will be available in the second half of April.

Writing (on) the Urban Question is free for all participants. It is sponsored by the Brussels Centre for Urban Studies and the VUB Doctoral School (NSE).
